Walking down the beer and wine aisle of my local grocer, I can’t help but notice the shelf space for non-alcoholic drinks keeps getting bigger.
Are we living at the start of The Zero Proof Renaissance? Not really… calling it a renaissance would imply a revival, that we harken back to some great, but lost, NA culture. No, this is something different. Something totally new.
An NA State of Mind
The early NA industry is made of many independent beverage-makers, startups basically. They are crafting new adult beverages that won’t mess you up, but do mess up Big Alcohol’s dominance as the adult beverage-of-choice. That's why today there are hundreds of zero-proof creations to discover, with more being invented all the time. Granted, some drinks are better than others and finding the gems takes trial and error which can be overwhelming if you're just starting out!
Your Monthly Mix of Mindful Sips
If that feeling of wonder+overwhelm resonates with you, we were in your shoes just a couple years ago and it’s exactly why we created SobrBox: to help people like us find what they like.
We want to make exploring the NA World easier and more affordable for you. We do it by constantly ordering and taste-testing new NA drinks, sifting the good from the just-okay, and then every month sending you a curated sampling of the ones we genuinely loved the most.
You’ll get six cans and one powdered mix delivered to your door. You can buy a single box or join our subscription for as long as you like. Our goal is to give you a reference point to start from so you can explore your local NA offerings and confidently try the drinks you find yourself.
But SobrBox is about much more than beverages
When we started thinking about what SobrBox could be, we didn’t want to just be people who shipped drinks. We want to be an informative and trust-worthy resource for people who are exploring sobriety, taking a break, cutting back, or simply curious about a zero-proof lifestyle. On our blog and social channels, we’ll be posting not only NA beverage reviews but also sobriety and wellness tips, sober-travel ideas, and occasional recaps of NA events we attend or host in our area.
Why Now?
We’re living through a cultural shift with many US adults rethinking their relationship to alcohol. A recent Gallup poll showed only 54% of adults said they drink,1 the smallest percentage since they started tracking the question 86 years ago. And yet, U.S. society feels awash in alcohol; you can’t go a day without seeing some reference to it in our physical environment or media.
But try as Big Alcohol might, the times they are a-changin’. Decreases in drinking are coinciding with a decline in alcohol-fueled nightlife culture, a decline in the rate of people who host or attend house parties, and a marked increase in health awareness cited among young people as the reason they choose not to partake. Clearly people are beginning to break old patterns and try new approaches to their lives, with many choosing to cut back on alcohol — not necessarily to quit forever, but to feel healthier, sleep better, socialize more mindfully, and enjoy life without the downsides of drinking.
From a business perspective, the early NA industry is an interesting world where one’s local NA offerings are more-or-less unique to their locale. That will change over the years as more beverage-makers achieve national distribution, but right now it’s difficult to discover much of what the Non-Alcoholic beverage category, as a whole, has to offer.
From craft NA beer, de-alcoholized wines, and spirit-free mocktails mimicking the classics we know and love, it’s a remarkable time for the sober and sober-curious individual like ourselves, if you can find them. So, why now? Because these drinks are out there, but hard to find, at the exact time many adults are looking for alternatives to alcohol. That's where SobrBox can help.
Trying Sobriety or Cutting Back for the First Time? You’re in Good Company.
If this is your first introduction to sobriety and exploring modern NA options, here are a few tips:
-
Don’t let perfection be the enemy of You Tried. You don’t need a strict goal to get started, the important thing is that you start. See if you can find one NA drink to throw in the rotation for a single day. Then see if you can get through a single day with NA drinks alone. No need to go cold-turkey for forever or set lofty goals right now. Just aim to get through 1 day and do that as many times as you need to. The rest will follow.
-
Think about the drinking rituals you look forward to and modify them for NA. A chilled glass, a garnish, a hot bath, good book, or the game; sobriety shouldn’t feel like a task or chore, make it feel like a reward. But if your old habits trigger your brain to reach for the booze, ask: what new rituals can you create? What would make you look forward to not drinking alcohol?
-
Listen to how you feel. Take stock of your ‘before’ and ‘after,’ many people notice better sleep, more energy, and clearer mornings within days. Can confirm.
- Sample before you settle and keep an open mind. The NA landscape is effin’ huge. Sipping a variety month after month helps you discover your true favorites but you’ll probably come across drinks you don’t love. Take the good, leave the bad, and keep exploring.
Wherever you are on your sober or sober-curious path, we’re truly glad you’re here. SobrBox exists to help you discover incredible drinks, but also to offer support, community, and hopefully some inspiration along the way. Here’s to our journey, one mindful sip at a time.
Cheers!
